Huonville is the perfect place to start exploring the beautiful Huon Valley. Being central to both sides of the river there are many places to enjoy as you travel along the Great Southern Drive. Take some time to wonder at the majestic scenery along the Huon River, take a hike on many of the trails and grab a coffee and snack at one of the picturesque towns dotted along the river and D’Entrecasteaux Channel.

Home Hill Winery 

Multi-award winning winery and restaurant in Ranelagh offering locally sourced fine dining overlooking the vineyard and farmland. 

Kate Hill Wines

Located in Huonville, Kate and her husband Charles acquired an old apple cool store and have converted the 100 year old timber shed into a winery. Tastings are Friday to Sunday at their cellar door at 21 Dowlings Road, Huonville.

Hartzview Vineyard

Enjoy tastings including Pinot Noir, friut ports and liquers as well as smallgoods. Tasmania’s rich heritage can be explored at the restored friut pickers’ huts – home to workers and their families, and Italian Prisoners of War in the early 1900s. 

Nandroya Winery

Located in Margate this winery and cellar door is limited to Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Open from September to May. 

Heron’s Rise Vineyard

Located at Kettering, this family owned vineyard offers Pinot, Reisling and Muller Thurgau. Enjoy great wine and fantastic views across the vineyards and D’entrecasteaux Channel. 

Sight Seeing

Franklin and the Wooden Boat Centre 

Scenic historic township on the banks of the Huon River. Take a stroll, read the historical plaques and learn about the original use of some of the old buildings. Stop in and visit the Wooden Boat Centre – the only wooden boat building centre in Australia. Join a tour into the workshop and marvel at the skills that have been preserved over the years.

Day Trips

Hartz Mountain National Park 

A window into the south-west wilderness with features including small glacial lakes, waterfalls off dolerite ranges and a variety of vegetation from we eucalypt forest to alpine heath on exposed mountain tops. Some great walks to navigate! 

Duckhole Lake 

A beautiful easy walk along a creek bank through regenerated forest to a very peaceful flooded sinkhole. 

Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs 

Spacious and well-lit dolomite caves with spectacular subterranean formations including flowstone, stalactites, columns, shawls, stalagmites and the unusual helictites. Join a tour with a Parks and Wildlife guide. 

Cockle Creek 

The furthest point you can drive in Australia! Its rich history can be found today in Aboriginal sites, abandoned tramways, gravestones and ruins.  


Tahune Airwalk 

Walk among the treetops 50m above the ground, past rare species of King Billy Pine and Celery Top pine only found in Tasmania. Other forest walks complete the experience including the Huon Pine walk and don’t miss the Eagle Hang Gliding Adventure. 

Sailing the Huon 

Take a trip on the beautiful Huon River on the 22m wooden ketch “Yukon”. Cruises depart daily from the Franklin marina next to the Wooden Boat Centre.
